The “Foreign Language Effect”: Why It’s Sometimes Easier to Speak Your Truth in a Second Language
In which language is it easier for you to say, “I love you”? ♥️ In which language is it easier to admit a mistake and say, “I’m sorry”?
In which language is it easier to say a firm “No” to someone close to you?
Most people assume the answer is their native tongue. But if you are proficient in a second language, the truth might surprise you.
Take a moment to answer honestly: In which language do you feel more comfortable expressing what is truly on your mind? In which language do you feel less self-conscious when setting boundaries or standing up for yourself?
It’s a paradox, but it’s true: sometimes, it is much easier to discuss complex or deeply personal topics in a foreign language.
Why does this happen? It’s because every word in our native language has been “soaked” in deep emotions, associations, and cultural taboos since childhood.
